VISIT
BY SHIHAN AND STUDENTS
In
April of 2003, we were once again honoured to receive a visit from our
Shihan Osamu Hirano. He also brought along 10 of his students from 2
of his dojos in Japan, Wakayama Headquarters and the Wakayama Medical
University.
Our club organized a wonderful dinner at the Sapodilla Restaurant to
welcome the group to Vancouver. Dinner started off with a welcome toast
by Sensei George Chan, and followed with Shihan saying a few words on
the practice of karate. Our fellow students from Japan enjoyed their
North American meals of steak and fish - and were surprised by the generous
portions! Everyone had a great time eating, drinking and getting to
know each other.
Master
Shihan Hirano held a special seminar focusing on several shitei katas
and sparring techniques. Students learned a great deal that day! We
partnered up with our fellow Japanese students and had the opportunity
to practice with each other. Afterwards, Shihan conducted testing for
3 of our Black Belt students - who all passed.
For
many of the students from Japan, it was their first time in Vancouver
and members of our dojo took them out to see the Vancouver sights. At
the farewell dinner, many of us had formed great friendships with each
other and were sad to say goodbye so soon.
